You designed something on your laptop, the colors looked perfect — bright blue, vivid red, crisp white — and then the printed version came back looking slightly duller or noticeably different. This is one of the most common surprises for first-time print customers, and it almost always comes down to one thing: color mode.
Here's what's actually happening, and how to avoid it on your next order.
Two Different Color Systems
RGB — What Screens Use
RGB stands for Red, Green, Blue. Phones, laptops, and TVs create color by mixing light — combining these three colors at different intensities to produce every shade you see on screen. Because it's built from light, RGB can display a very wide, vibrant range of colors, including bright neons and glowing tones that don't exist in physical ink.
CMYK — What Printers Use
CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black). Instead of light, printers apply layers of physical ink onto paper. This is a more limited color range than light-based RGB, which means certain bright or neon shades simply can't be reproduced exactly the same way in print.
In short: your screen creates color with light, but a printer creates color with ink — and ink can't match everything a screen can display.
Why This Matters for Your Design
If a design file is created or saved in RGB and sent straight to print, the printer has to convert those colors into CMYK automatically. This conversion can shift certain colors — especially bright blues, purples, and greens — resulting in a printed piece that looks slightly different from what you saw on screen.
This is especially important for:
Business cards and letterheads, where brand color consistency matters
Flyers and brochures using bold brand palettes
Banners and signage where colors need to stay consistent across a whole campaign
Stickers and packaging where exact brand colors represent your identity
How to Get More Accurate Print Colors
Design in CMYK from the start, if you're building the file yourself — this avoids surprise shifts during conversion.
Use Pantone (spot color) references for exact brand colors — especially useful for logos, where consistency matters most.
Ask for a proof or sample before a large print run. For big orders, seeing a physical sample first can save cost and reprints later.
Don't rely solely on how it looks on your screen — different monitors display color differently too, so what you see isn't a perfect preview of the final print.
